Montreal is an island, and I think it's an identifying trait that reminds me of how cosmopolitan my city is that I look north and almost always see a plane landing. People bring energy and ideas to my city, and I'm happy to see them arriving to la belle ville. I work in Old Montreal. It's semi-industrial, with tech companies and condos sprinkled in for good measure. I don't think an airport would kill us. In fact, we'd probably be happy for the additional revitalization of our city.

In the meantime, those waterfront Toronto condos and houses and boats and tourism is all paid for by: an economy! Which mean businesses and business travel. And I am as aware of the ecological problems facing our earth as well, but think that maybe the flights getting closer to people's destinations means that less gas will be guzzled whipping people way out to an airport in Missasauga. A high-speed train between upper and lower Canada would be great, but in the meantime, Porter is a good solution.
